Giveback Project

Presenting at Dr. Elin Kelsey’s Climate Action Event at Thompson Rivers University

While completing my Bachelor of Arts degree, I took English 4770: Pathways to Hope and Resilience. In this course I had to complete a project focused on the importance of hope for resilience, so I did my project on the power of hope in combating climate change. I decided that the goals of my project would be to educate others on the importance of hope for overcoming challenges, how to be more hopeful, and what they can do to act against climate change to inspire hope for the future. To achieve these goals, I did a presentation for a Biology 11 class that taught students the importance of hope for combating climate change, provided students with different ways to combat climate change, and shared different organizations that spread a more hopeful message about the future. Once finished with this project, I volunteered to present the details and findings of my project at the Hope Matters! Climate Action Event at TRU.

This experience allowed me to develop my ability to be a leader in environmental sustainability. While completing this project I not only developed my own resiliency, optimism, and determination in combating climate change, but I also developed the skills needed to help others do the same. As I graduate from the education program at TRU, I will use my ability to nurture hope and resilience to improve my students’ wellbeing and academic performance. I plan to do this by implementing hopeful narratives into lessons/conversations on topics that lack optimism or hope, such as those on climate change. While completing this project, I have also developed my ability to communicate effectively, and I have learned that effective communication is crucial for amplifying hope and inspiring climate action and sustainability.
